Have you ever considered adding a bite and sting kit to your backpack, suitcase or even for use around your home? Sure we never think we need things like these and it also raises the question of whether or not snake bite kits are effective. Truth is, this kit has been very helpful in the last couple of years for me. It’s really effortless to use and I’ve tried it for a variety of bites, anywhere from plain bug bites to brutal scorpion stings. Thankfully, I haven’t needed to use it on any snake bites and I pray I will never have too. Are snake bite kits effective
The one kit I like to use and recommend to anyone that may be interested is “The Sawyer Extractor Pump Bite and Sting Kit.” The kit is compact and comes with 4 different varieties of cups. You can easily use it with one hand and it eliminates the need for having to use knifes or scalpel blades. It also includes a disposable razor, a few alcohol pads, band aids and a complete bite and sting book.
It’s simple, all you need to do is apply the pump to the infected area with the suction cup desired. Then extract the plunger slowly and push it back toward the infected area. Your skin will start to be pulled into the cup and the suction process begins. The venom starts to be extracted out of the body from the same area it was injected. That’s it, nothing more. Doing this simple little action could help you in the future.
These bite and sting kits aren’t meant to completely treat bites or stings, but they are solely used to relieve pain, itching, and swelling. A more venomous snake or spider bite requires immediate medical attention. Using the kit may help medical results significantly.
Some of the bites and stings it targets are:
- Bees, Wasps & Hornets
They have been proven to be most effective when applied seconds after the bite or sting. However, I have had good results days after a bite that was causing a lot of pain. A few years ago, I had a friend who was bitten on her hand from a spider while she was sleeping at night. She woke up later and didn’t think anything of it, except for the fact, that she had a nasty looking bite. Days later it started causing her pain, so I applied the extractor pump to the bite and it immediately began pulling out a lot of white fluid from the wound and afterwards her pain subsided and the bite healed.
A little warning though, it does cause discomfort and pain while extracting with the pump on the infected area.
- Light and compact
- Easy to use
- Very effective when used quickly after a bite or sting
- Suction cups are reusable and washable
- More effective in some areas than others
- Still may need to seek medical assistance (a must after a snake bite)
- Damage to pump if it comes in contact with water
- Works best when applied quickly
Having a little bite and sting kit gives you the ability to be ready for the critters that decide to take their aggression out on you. It also makes for a great addition to a first aid kit as well.
